About WAA

WAA (Writers on Assam Adivasis) is an organization of Adivasis and their well-wishers formed to assist Adivasi intellectuals and thinkers in coming together on a common platform to empower the Adivasi society in Assam through production of literature and by holding seminars and symposiums. It plans to carry out two major activities every year: first, to organize a national seminar; and second, to publish books containing researched papers on issues related to history, culture, education, economics, politics, philosophy, ethos, beliefs, and the worldview of the Adivasis. The focus is to present an insider’s view of the Adivasis of Assam. WAA also envisions to provide a platform to foster and encourage the budding Adivasi researchers.

The primary aim of such seminar and symposium is to foster an understanding of the critical issues facing the Adivasi community, such as land, identity, wages, education, skill development, sustainable livelihood, women’s empowerment, health challenges, and the aspirations of the Adivasis of Assam. Through such seminar and symposium, it aims to bring together thinkers, researchers, and social activists from across Adivasi society, irrespective of religion or tribe. It will also include academicians and researchers from beyond the Adivasi community and from outside the state and region. The seminars are designed to provide a platform to exhibit and celebrate the rich culture of the Adivasis through traditional dress, songs and dances, rituals, food, and values.

In pursuing these goals, WAA networks and collaborates with various academic institutions and research organizations to actively participate in WAA process. The books currently published are in English, but WAA plans to bring out publications in other languages as well.

WAA is governed by an Executive Committee comprising of a President, Secretary, Treasurer, and six other members who guide the organization’s vision and strategic direction.
